MIAMI THEATER CENTER PRESENTS: "THEM BEAUX"

MIAMI THEATER CENTER PRESENTS

"THEM BEAUX"

Miami Theater Center (MTC) is proud to present Them Beaux, a beguiling SandBox Series production by Joshua Jean-Baptiste from Lab 9, a Miami theater collective founded by young and diverse artists from New World School of the Arts. Them Beaux will be presented at the SandBox, an intimate theater next to MTC’s MainStage, April 29th through May 13th.

Written and directed by Joshua Jean-Baptiste, Lab 9’s production of Them Beaux is a new adaptation of the 17th century farce, “The Beaux’ Stratagem,” written by Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig and set in Staffordshire, England.

Contrasting to the original play, Them Beaux is set in the Deep South, a place where issues of race, sexual identity and gender equality all come to the fore when two con men mix a little too much pleasure with business. High jinks and hilarity unfold both on stage and on film in this provocative, antebellum interpretation of a 17th century tale of love and deception.

An experimental element of the production, Them Beaux will blur the lines between film and live theater through multimedia scenes that weave the two together, adding a modern touch to a classic tale.

Them Beaux is open to the general public and tickets are $25 each. Performances will take place Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. between April 29thand May 7th, as well as Thursday, May 12th and Friday, May 13th at 8 p.m.

A graduate from Miami’s New World School of the Arts, SandBox Series artist Joshua Jean-Baptiste is a founding member of Lab 9 and produced Voices of Island, the first Lab 9 production presented at Miami Theater Center. He also wrote POOF and Plenty of Shrimp which were both presented at Micro Theater Miami, and Space Apes presented at Louis O. Gerritis Theater. Jean-Baptiste performed in Everybody Drinks the Same Water, The Red Thread, Space Apesand The Beaux’ Stratagem. Jean-Baptiste holds a B.F.A. in theater and Acting from University of Florida.

Joshua Jean-Baptiste and fellow artist Edson Jean recently won the ‘Project Greenlight’ Digital Series Competition to develop #Josh, a web-series about the life of a young Haitian-American as he moves on from the recent death of his mother and into the apartment of his sexually promiscuous cousin in Miami, Florida.

Performances will take place at MTC located at 9806 NE 2nd Avenue in Miami Shores. Tickets may be purchased online at www.mtcmiami.org, or by calling 305.751.9550. Group, student, and senior ticket prices are available.
