This October, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County turns 10. To commemorate this milestone, Miami’s home for the performing arts is inviting the entire community for an all-day birthday party onSaturday, October 8, 2016.  

The Arsht Center will celebrate its 10^TH BIRTHDAY PARTY by offering 10 hours of free* performances, fun activities and family-friendly programming starting at 11 a.m. and continuing through the late evening. The celebration kicks off inside the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall with a joyous parade led by Bahamas Junkanoo Revue and an onstage birthday cake-cutting ceremony with city officials and dignitaries. Miami Music Project’s Children’s Orchestra and Miami Children’s Choruswill get everyone in the festive spirit by performing “Happy Birthday To You” in three languages – English, Spanish and Creole. Partygoers can also expect confetti canons and complimentary sweet treats.

The fun continues with performances on the Center’s main stages featuring a variety of Miami-based artists that have previously performed at the Arsht Center, as well as other local favorites, to create a lineup highlighting the city’s vibrant, ever-growing artistic power (see below for lineup; detailed performance times will be updated online at www.arshtcenter.org).

The day culminates at 7:30 pm inside the Ziff Ballet Opera House with a thrilling concert starring local favorites Spam AllStars and Tiempo Libre, with CeeLo Green as the day’s main headliner. The five-time Grammy Award winner and former coach of the hit TV show, “The Voice,” makes his anticipated return to the Center after a spectacular performance in 2010. Green will wow fans with worldwide hits such as “Crazy” and “Forget You,” along with songs from his latest album Heart Blanche. Tickets to the CeeLo Green concert are $10 and are on sale now. Immediately following the concert, everyone is invited to cap off the celebration with a free outdoor after party with DJ Sama and Mr. Pauer on the Center’s Thomson Plaza for the Arts.

10^th BIRTHDAY PARTY SCHEDULE:

Morning – Bahamas Junkanoo Revue – Knight Concert Hall

Bahamas Junkanoo Revue is a highly-spirited performance parade boasting beautiful costumes, traditionally choreographed dances and body movements accompanied by lively Bahamian music. Hand-made goatskin and bass drums, tom-toms, cowbells, small one-note horns, whistles, trumpets, trombones and sousaphones combine to create a unique experience celebrating Bahamian culture.

Morning – Fushu Daiko – Knight Concert Hall

Since 1990, Fushu Daiko has practiced the art of Taiko, a musical art form that builds on a 2,600+ year old tradition of Japanese drumming. Their music combines the traditional drums and rhythms of Japan with musical styles from around the world such as jazz and R&B to create an exciting, powerful cross-cultural experience that strives to cross boundaries and connect cultures.

Early Afternoon – Cirque Dreams – Carnival Studio Theater

Since 1993, the Cirque Dreams brand has entertained more than 50 million people worldwide under the artistic direction of founder Neil Goldberg. Known for their innovative and wildly entertaining spectacles, the South Florida-based company will present a unique show specifically developed to celebrate the Arsht Center’s 10^thbirthday.

Cirque Dreams shows have appeared in theaters, casinos, theme parks, at sea and on Broadway. Both Cirque Dreams and Neil Goldberg have garnered international critical acclaim from USA Today, The New York Times, Associated Press, CNN, “Today Show,” “Fox & Friends” and more. Today, the Cirque Dreams franchise includes a growing number of popular Cirque Dreams brand shows with many future productions and brand partnerships in development.

Early Afternoon – Guitars Over Guns – Knight Concert Hall

The Guitars Over Guns program is designed to provide positive, culturally relevant, hands on music, dance and visual arts education and mentoring for at-risk children throughout the community. Children attending the event will have an opportunity to learn the basic steps to read and write contemporary music, play instruments and possibly even perform on stage!

Early Afternoon – Spanglish Wrangler – Peacock Foundation Studio

Everyone is invited to pick up a little Spanish while singing and dancing along to roots-based, acoustic songs about alligators, chicken, bears and more. Will Thomas’ toe-tapping songs provide a lively and enjoyable bilingual lesson in Español and English.

Early Afternoon – Karen Peterson & Dancers – Peacock Foundation Studio

Karen Peterson is an award-winning choreographer and graduate of the Boston Conservatory, as well as a past VSA teaching artist, performer and trainer. Karen has developed and led “mixed-ability” dance events with her company Karen Peterson & Dancers(KPD) since 1990 and have represented Florida on a local, national and international level. She has taught and performed mixed-ability at various dance and disability festivals in New York City, Atlanta, Cleveland, Brazil, Italy, Scotland, Bosnia, Serbia, Guatemala, Belgrade and Montenegro. KPD performed for the VSA International Conference in Washington D.C. in 2010 and directed workshops in Guatemala City for “Alas de Libertad” (Wings of Freedom), a VSA Latin American partner.

Early Afternoon – Delou Africa – Knight Concert Hall

Delou Africa will explore the rich culture of Africa through dance, song, music, rhythms and folktale complete with colorful and traditional costumes. Since 1987, the organization’s main goal has been to bridge cultural gaps by enhancing cultural awareness and empowering individuals to embrace diversity through artistic educational projects. Delou is a Wolof word spoken in Senegal West Africa that means “back” or “return to.”

Early Afternoon – Bluejay – Knight Concert Hall

Awarded Best Band of 2015 by the Miami New Times, Bluejay is a passionate, electroacoustic trio led by the androgynous voice and dreamlike guitar of singer-songwriter Jay Thomas, backed by his sister JoJo Sunshine (drums/synth), and his boyfriend Oscar Quesada (cello/beats). Their avant-garde, genre-bending songs invoke magical realism with powerful three-part harmonies, dynamic arrangements, and spirited lyrics. Bluejay has performed at festivals including III Points, TransAtlantic, Virginia Key GrassRoots, and the Harvey Milk Festival.

Late Afternoon – Ground Zero Crew – Peacock Foundation Studio

The Ground Zero Crew is part of the Flipside Kings family, an acclaimed b-boy crew founded in 1994. Over the last 20+ years, the group has grown into a collective of artists that includes dancers, graffiti/visual artists, musicians, photographers, film-makers, playwrights, and educators. A longstanding fixture in Miami’s cultural art scene, the group competes and adjudicates in international dance events, creates contemporary dance/theater performances, and teaches a wide array of workshops.

Late Afternoon – Ketchy Shuby – Knight Concert Hall

Ketchy Shuby is a six-piece soul and funk band with an infectious sound that takes audiences back to a soulful era while still modernizing a contemporary sound. Ketchy Shuby has shared the stage with the likes of Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, The Family Stone, Mos Def, Monophonics, and N.E.R.D to name a few.

Late Afternoon – Afrobeta – Knight Concert Hall

With a genuine love for performance, the local electro-pop duo, Afrobeta, has become a staple on electronic dance music stages around the world and have found their way onto the SiriusXM Electric Area and Ultra Music Festival Sirius XM BPM airwaves with ease. Bred from the melting pot of cultures found in Miami’s streets, Cuci Amador and Tony “Smurphio” Laurencio fuse electronic production with the romance of an open mind. The duo’s stage presence has empowered audiences at Ultra Music Festival (UMF), the Identity Festival tour in 2011, Glastonbury, Space Ibiza, UMF Brazil and Korea.

Late Afternoon – Lion Parade – Thomson Plaza for the Arts

According to legend, The Lion Dance was used to scare off lions that terrified a village. Nowadays, the tradition continues to attract good luck and scare off evil spirits. Guests can expect to witness a dance performance complete with elaborate costumes, loud drumming, cymbals and gongs.

Evening – DJ Le Spam & Spam AllStars – 
Ziff Ballet Opera House

DJ Le Spam & Spam AllStars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with Latin, funk, hip-hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga.   

Spam Allstars was formed by Andrew Yeomanson, aka DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993.  He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami-based artist Nil Lara.  Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers and DJ skills with a live band. Spam Allstars have appeared on “Good Morning America,” Mun2's “The Roof,” “CBS This Morning,” NPR's “All Things Considered,” CBS-4's “Making of the Latin Grammy’s,” NBC 6's “Trendtrackers,” and a variety of regional and international radio programs.

Evening–Tiempo Libre–Ziff Ballet Opera House

Three-time Grammy-nominated Afro-Caribbean music group Tiempo Libre is one of the hottest Latin bands today. Whether playing in concert halls, jazz clubs, festivals or dance venues, Tiempo Libre is celebrated for its sophisticated tropical music featuring an irresistible, exhilarating mix of jazz harmonies, contemporary sonorities and seductive Latin rhythms.  The Arsht Center’s hit musical, Miami Libre was based on and starred Tiempo Libre.

Throughout the past 14 years, the band has appeared around the globe and has been featured on TV shows including “The Tonight Show,” “Live from Lincoln Center,” and “Dancing with the Stars” as well as many entertainment programs on Univision and Telemundo. Since the group’s formation in Miami 2001, its members have been on a mission to share their Afro-Caribbean heritage with as wide an audience as possible, reinterpreting and re-invigorating music born from the meeting of their musical origins with their new American experience.
