Wednesday, February 1, 5:30 to 7:30pm Bronx Trolley Night Hop off The Bronx Trolley: First Wednesdays Arts & Culture Tour at the Bronx Museum for a free guided tour of the exhibitions with a Museum teaching artist. The Bronx Trolley is a project of the South Bronx Cultural Corridor. Making a cultural loop through the lower Grand Concourse and in other sections of the Bronx, it provides an innovative way to travel free while giving Bronxites and tourists alike the opportunity to sample several of the area’s hottest cultural attractions, dining establishments and entertainment venues. |

Friday, February 3, 6:00pm to 10:00pm Concert Begins at 7:30pm First Fridays! Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts Featuring Brown Rice Family Carnegie Hall comes to the Bronx! Join us for a special performance by the Brown Rice Family. Brooklyn-based world roots band Brown Rice Family is a high-energy, nine-member ensemble that combines an eclectic mix of musical influences that encompass reggae, hip-hop, Brazilian, Afrobeat, jazz, rock, Latin, and funk. With members hailing from all over the world, Brown Rice Family draws on its diverse backgrounds to create a colorful, rhythm-driven, and highly danceable sound. This performance features new works written and performed by youth in collaboration with Brown Rice Family as part of Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections program. From these submissions the Teen Council will curate an exhibition, which will be on view at The Bronx Museum of the Arts in May 2017. New York City-based teens ages 13-19 are eligible to submit. On ViewCollection Spotlight: Morton Broffman January 4 - Ongoing In honor of Black History Month, the Bronx Museum is featuring four works by the Bronx-born photographer Morton Broffman. In the spring of 1965, Broffman was among the scores of print journalists, television reporters, and photographers from around the country who traveled to Alabama in 1965 to participate in and record the Selma to Montgomery voting rights march. Read more > Collection Spotlight: Öyvind Fahlström January 4 through February 5, 2017 This month the Bronx Museum highlights the work of Brazilian artist Öyvind Fahlström. Working in a wide range of media and themes, Fahlström avoided affiliation with any art category throughout his brief albeit productive career. Equally influenced by surrealism, pop art, situationism, and even documentary filmmaking, Fahlström borrowed imagery and styles from comics and the media to create original and relevant artworks that unmask the absurdities of modern society. Read more > Linda Cunningham: South Bronx Waterfront Sagas On view through February 19, 2017 Linda Cunningham explores the issues of time, transience, and contradictions through images of the shifting urban present. Environmental concerns juxtaposed against industry, urban blight, and the loss of the natural environment drive her practice, in addition to gentrification and the changing landscape of the Bronx, her home for many years. Read more > The Neighbors, part two, in two parts: Sanctuary: Andrea Bowers and Home: Andrea Aragón On view through February 12, 2017 For the second iteration of The Neighbors guest curator SofÃa Hernández Chong Cuy organizes two concurrent exhibitions: Sanctuary, featuring work by the Andrea Bowers, and Home, presenting work by photographer Andrea Aragón. These dual exhibitions are presented in dialogue and provide alternative perspectives on immigration in the United States. Read more > Robert Raphael: Symposium On view through February 19, 2017 Robert Raphael’s ceramic-based work draws on the complex history of decorative art, a tradition that intersects and runs parallel to the history of art. Rather than interpreting ornamentation as superficial, Raphael believes that the strength of decoration lies in its seductive nature and the complex meanings that often result when surface, mass, pattern, and cultural history conflate.
